A Word from Joe
For those of you who don’t know me, I figured I’d share some thoughts about who I am and where I’m coming from.
A few years ago, I had to really think about what I wanted out of weightlifting. I seriously considered opening a gym with my buddy, Jim Murphy – a great powerlifting and strongman coach. We figured between his expertise in those realms and mine in weightlifting, we could make a pretty awesome strength focused gym. It was a great idea, but in the end, after much research on the subject, we decided not to move forward on it.
When I really thought about it, I didn’t get into weightlifting to run a business, I did it because I developed a passion for the sport. I really enjoy training, competing and coaching. As an official, I like to give back to the sport. Especially when I see how thin the ranks are when it comes to officiating. Without them, there is no competition.
These are my three main goals in the sport:
- Be an ambassador
Educate and inspire others to get into weightlifting
Support other like minds
Officiate - Work with a local team
Build and maintain an inclusive local team which includes everyone from youth through masters - Innovate
Think outside the box – but keep one foot in reality
Always seek to learn more
